Baro Hydropower Projects Pre-feasibility Study
Project Overview
This document is a pre-feasibility study for medium-scale hydropower projects on the Baro River in Ethiopia, conducted by NORPLAN A.S and Norconsult International A.S for the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Ministry of Water Resources.
Project Location
The Baro River projects are located in Ethiopia near the border with Sudan, within the larger interconnected power system of Ethiopia. The study also references other project areas including Genale, Guder, and Geba.
Cascade Development
The Baro River Scheme proposes a cascade development with two main power stations:
- Baro 1: Located upstream with a dam at elevation 1505m
- Baro 2: Located downstream with a dam at elevation 1320m
Baro 1 Project Details
Key components of the Baro 1 project include:
- Two dam alternatives: RCC Dam and CFRD Dam (Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam)
- Power intake at elevation 1485m
- Headrace tunnel and surge shaft
- Power station with turbine and generator floors
- Diversion tunnel at bottom level
- Spillway channel with stilling basin
