BARO-AKORO RIVER BASIN DEVELOPMENT - SOCIO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
Overview
This document presents the socio-economic analysis for the Baro-Akobo River Basin Integrated Development Master Plan in Ethiopia. It focuses on population aspects including demographics, urbanization, fertility, mortality, migration, and their implications for development planning.
Key Findings
1. Population Characteristics
- 1993 Population: 2.17 million in the project area (75,912 km²)
- Density: 28.6 persons/km² (ranging from 7 in Gambela to 54.5 in Oromiya)
- Major Ethnic Groups: Oromos (majority), Amharas, and various regional groups
- Religions: Mix of Christians and Muslims with regional variations
2. Population Growth
- 1984-1993 Growth Rate: 2.37% annually
- Special Events: Significant population fluctuations due to refugee movements (up to 400,000 Sudanese refugees) and resettlement programs (200,000 people)
- Projection to 2035: Population expected to grow to 5.3 million
3. Urbanization
- 1993 Urban Population: 8.1% of total (175,046 people)
- Major Towns: Gambela, Asosa, Mizan Teferi, Metu, Dembi Dolo
- Projection to 2035: Urban population expected to reach 778,600 (14.7% of total)
4. Fertility and Mortality
- Fertility Rate (1984): 7.3-7.6 children per woman
- Mortality: High infant mortality (102-144 deaths per 1000 live births)
- AIDS Impact: Growing concern with increasing prevalence rates
5. Migration Patterns
- Significant rural-urban migration flows
- Historical in-migration of refugees and resettled populations
- Projected continued out-migration from rural areas
Development Implications
- Population densities will triple by 2035, reaching 70 persons/km²
- Gambela region expected to experience the fastest growth (4.84% annually)
- Significant pressure on land and resources expected
- Need for expanded social services (education, healthcare)
- Urban planning challenges with growing towns
Data Limitations
The study notes several data challenges including:
- Administrative boundary changes over time
- Incomplete migration data
- Difficulty quantifying refugee impacts
- Need for updated census information (1994 census data not yet available during study)
Recommendations
- Need for further studies with updated census data
- Improved monitoring of population movements
- Specific attention to HIV/AIDS prevention
- Comprehensive urban planning for growing towns
- Land use planning to accommodate population growth
