The Baro-Akobo River Basin Integrated Development Master Plan is a comprehensive study commissioned by the Ethiopian Ministry of Water Resources to assess and plan the sustainable development of water, natural, and social resources in southwestern Ethiopia.
The study area covers the Baro-Akobo basin in southwestern Ethiopia between latitudes 5° and 10° N and longitudes 33° and 36° E. The basin forms a joint border with Sudan and contains diverse topography ranging from highlands (2,000-3,000m) to lowlands (400-500m).
The basin has abundant water resources with mean annual runoff estimated at 23,237 million cubic meters.
The basin has significant hydropower potential with realistic installed capacity of over 1,500 MW.
Three priority irrigation projects identified:
Six development scenarios were evaluated with varying combinations of hydropower and irrigation development:
Recommended Scenario (V): Combines large-scale hydropower development for the national grid with commercial irrigation projects, providing the highest economic benefits while addressing environmental and social concerns.
The implementation will be phased:
The Master Plan provides a comprehensive framework for sustainable development of the Baro-Akobo basin, balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social welfare over a 40-year planning horizon.
