Arjo-Dedessa Irrigation Project Feasibility Study Report
1. Project Overview
The Arjo-Dedessa Irrigation Project is a major development initiative in Ethiopia's Abbay Basin (Blue Nile Basin), focusing on water resource management for agricultural irrigation. The feasibility study was conducted by the Water Works Design & Supervision Enterprise in association with Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Pvt. Ltd.
Key Project Details:
- Location: Dedessa River sub-basin within the Abbay Basin
- Catchment Area: 9,981 km² at proposed dam site
- Mean Annual Flow: 3,826 million m³ (at Arjo gauging station)
- Project Components: Dam, irrigation system, and associated infrastructure
2. Hydrological and Meteorological Analysis
2.1 Climate Characteristics
The Dedessa catchment has a uni-modal rainfall pattern with:
- Main rainy season: May to September (63% of annual rainfall)
- Dry season: November to February (7% of annual rainfall)
- Mean annual rainfall: 1,453 mm (project area)
- Temperature range: 20.0°C (December) to 25.4°C (March)
2.2 Evapotranspiration
Reference evapotranspiration (ET₀) was calculated using the FAO Penman-Monteith method:
Month | Mean ET₀ (mm/day) | Mean ET₀ (mm/month) |
---|---|---|
Annual | 3.83 | 1,397 |
Peak (March) | 4.62 | 143 |
Lowest (December) | 3.44 | 107 |
2.3 Streamflow Analysis
Key findings from the hydrological analysis:
Return Period | Annual Flow (Mm³) | Peak Flood (m³/sec) |
---|---|---|
Mean Year | 2,328 | - |
75% Year | 1,729 | - |
10-year | - | 575 |
100-year | - | 871 |
10,000-year | - | 1,948 |
PMF | - | 3,690 |
2.4 Sediment Analysis
Sediment yield was estimated using the relationship: Gs = 0.078 Q¹·⁵
- Suspended sediment concentration: 45-1,670 mg/lt observed
- Bed load assumed to be 15% of suspended load
- Sediment distribution in reservoir calculated using Area-Increment method
3. Key Project Components
3.1 Water Resources Development
The project includes:
- Dam construction on Dedessa River
- Reservoir creation for water storage
- Irrigation system development
- Potential for hydropower generation
3.2 Agricultural Development
The irrigation project aims to support:
- Large-scale agricultural production
- Multiple cropping systems
- Improved food security in the region
4. Conclusions and Recommendations
The feasibility study confirms the technical viability of the Arjo-Dedessa Irrigation Project, with:
- Adequate water resources available in the Dedessa sub-basin
- Favorable climatic conditions for irrigation development
- Need for careful sediment management in reservoir planning
- Potential for integrated water resources management including hydropower
