Key Findings 2.1 General Geological Outline The region features: Thick alluvial deposits (>100m) from Pliocene to present Basic volcanic complex underlying alluvium Recent volcanic activity (last eruption ~100 years ago) High seismic activity along Ethiopian Rift Valley 2.2 Melka Sadi Weir Site Recommended foundation on conglomerates (excellent mechanical properties, impermeable) Surface silts have very low bearing strength (unsuitable for foundations) Construction joints needed to accommodate seismic activity 2.3 Melka Warar Weir Site Right bank on basalts, left bank on old alluvium below 728m elevation Safe bearing capacity >1 kg/sq.cm Low permeability in alluvium, slightly higher in basalts Additional investigations recommended for final design 2.4 Dyke Construction Soils suitable for construction (safety factor >2) Expected settlement ~30cm over >6 years Materials classified as silts, sandy silts and fine silts (A6, A7 AASHO classification) 2.5 Plain Alluvials Very low permeability (vertical: ~1×10-5 cm/sec, horizontal: ~2.4×10-4 cm/sec) Aquifer is practically static with low hydraulic gradient Expected saturation from irrigation in 5-6 years - drainage system required High salt content in waters (0.4 to 10 gpl) 2.6 Groundwater Potential Water-bearing sand/gravelly sand horizons found near volcanic hills Potential yield ~5 liters/second (needs further investigation) Wells would need to reach >100m depth 3.
