Amibara Project Design Report Summary
Project: Amibara Irrigation Project, Awash Valley, Ethiopia
Date: September 1973
Prepared by: Sir William Halcrow & Partners for Imperial Ethiopian Government
1. Project Overview
The Amibara Project is a major irrigation development in Ethiopia's Awash Valley, designed to irrigate 10,100 hectares of land (with potential expansion to include adjacent areas). It forms part of a larger regional development plan for the Middle Awash Valley.
Key Components:
- River diversion structure at Melka Sadi
- Main and primary supply canals
- Primary and secondary drainage system
- Flood protection dykes (western and eastern)
- Road network and bridges
- Settlement villages and housing
- Regional township and administration center
2. Design Highlights
Water Supply System
Key decision to use a single diversion structure at Melka Sadi rather than two structures as originally proposed, resulting in estimated cost savings of Eth$2 million.
Irrigation System
Component | Design Specification |
---|---|
Crop Water Requirements | Max 105mm half-monthly for cotton (1.68 l/sec/ha design duty) |
Primary Canal Capacity | 17 cumecs for Amibara (expandable to 23 cumecs for future developments) |
Secondary Canals | Following natural topography rather than rigid geometric layout |
Flood Protection
Western dyke designed to protect against 2000 m³/sec flood (50-year return period). Economic analysis suggests optimal dyke height of 3-4m.
Drainage System
Designed to handle 50mm/day storm intensity with 80% runoff from irrigated fields. Primary drains capacity approximately 36 m³/sec.
3. Implementation Plan
Phased Construction
- Phase I: 4,200 ha including AVA settlement farm (target completion June 1976)
- Phase II: 4,400 ha including existing concessions
- Phase III: Remaining 1,500 ha
Contract Structure
Contract Type | Description |
---|---|
Preliminary Works | Bush clearing, site investigations, link road construction |
Buildings & Services | Settlers housing, AVA staff housing, administration buildings |
Main Works | Barrage, canals, drains, roads, flood protection (international tender) |
4. Key Appendices
- Appendix B: Rationale for single diversion structure at Melka Sadi
- Appendix C: Effects of potential Angelele and Bolhamo developments
- Appendix F: Contract types and tendering procedures
- Appendix G: General conditions for minor works contracts
Critical Decisions Required from AVA
- Approval of single diversion structure design
- Confirmation of irrigation water duties
- Approval of flood protection criteria
- Acceptance of implementation program and contract structure
- Budget approval for preliminary works (including Eth$20,000 for site access improvements)
