Summary of Land Evaluation for Welkite Kulite Project
1. Project Overview
The report, titled "Land Evaluation for Irrigation Development in Welkite Kulite Project Area," was prepared by M. Y. Javed Mirza, an FAO Soil Survey Consultant, in October 1989. The study was conducted under the FAO/UNDP-assisted project ETH/88/013, sponsored by the Water Resources Development Authority (WRDA) of Ethiopia.
Key Objectives: Assess soil studies, recommend cropping patterns, and address land preparation and drainage problems for irrigation development in the Welkite Kulite area.
2. Location and Climate
- Location: 200 km southwest of Addis Ababa, along the left bank of the Kulite River.
- Area: ~3,820 hectares (ha).
- Climate:
- Annual rainfall: ~1,200 mm (70% from June–December, 20% from March–May).
- Temperature: "Warm Tropics" regime (mean annual ~18°C).
- Growing period: ~240 days for rainfed crops; year-round under irrigation.
3. Soil Characteristics
Two main soil series were identified:
Soil Series | Characteristics | Suitability |
---|---|---|
Darge Series | Deep, black clayey, moderately well-drained, slightly calcareous. | Moderately suitable (S2) for most crops; limitations include seedbed preparation (w) and erosion (e). |
Kulite Series | Very deep, very black clayey, imperfectly drained, periodically ponded. | Marginal (S3) due to drainage issues (d). |
4. Land Suitability for Crops
The report classifies land suitability into:
- S1: Highly suitable (productivity >60% of ideal).
- S2: Moderately suitable (40–60%).
- S3: Marginally suitable (<40%).
- N1/N2: Not suitable currently/permanently.
Selected Crop Suitability (Examples)
Crop | Darge Series | Kulite Series |
---|---|---|
Maize | S2w | S3d |
Potato | S3d | S3d |
Pepper | S2w | S3d |
5. Recommendations
- Priority Areas: Focus on moderately suitable lands (Mapping Units 2 and 3).
- Drainage: Install open-ditch systems to manage excess water.
- Mechanization: Transition from bullock to tractor power for tillage.
- Farmer Training: Teach irrigation control, contour ploughing, and erosion prevention.
6. Agricultural Review (1991)
A follow-up review in 1991 proposed:
- Key Crops: Soybeans, haricot beans, potatoes, onions, groundnuts, and peppers.
- Rotation System: 4-year cycle integrating legumes for soil fertility.
- Pilot Scheme: Recommended to test crop adaptability and management practices.
Note: The study emphasized integrating irrigation with rainfed agriculture and addressing socio-economic factors for sustainable development.
